Pameranian Obedience Training

The Pomeranian is a breed of small, sturdy toy dog that comes from a line of sledge dogs of Iceland. They usually stand about 7-10 inches high at the shoulder and weigh from 3 - 7 lb. These doges have a double coat that is made up of a short and fluffy layer that is beneath a full, long and straight coat on top. The hair on the neck and belly areas seems to feather out. There are several colors or Pomeranians including red, cream, black, brown, white, and multi-color.

The typical Pomeranian is active and ready to learn. Most of the time, they will get along with other pets, if they are introduced in a careful manner. They can make a great companion for families with children who are a little older and have good temperaments, and also the elderly. Because of the dog’s small stature, many times they are not best with younger children as they can be easily trampled or mishandled, or might become moody with smaller children.

Pomeranian Dogs These dogs are very smart and tend to be extremely loyal to their owner. Mostly they want to please, loving, gentle and show affection. Naps on the owner’s lap will be common place for this type of dog. They are quite affectionate. Pomeranians show a tendency towards being curious. They exhibit a confidence and can be a little commanding. They are best kept busy, so they don’t get bored and more curious. If a small watch dog is what you want, then you may want a Pomeranian, as they sense danger and bark when something doesn’t feel quite right. They are not much of a guard dog because of their size, but will certainly warn you of impending problems. “Poms” can be very territorial, especially with the owner or family around.

Because the dog has such a thick double coat, they will need to be brushed once a week and professional grooming may be required as well. When the dog is brushed, be sure to lift the top coat and brush the undercoat so it will help decrease matting and reduce shedding. They will also need good dental care, since this breed is known for tooth loss. Dry dog food may be helpful to keep the teeth and gums healthy.

A dog training course is recommended when training a Pomeranian, since they tend to need firm commands. They exhibit an ability to be easily trained. The owner must learn early on to control the dog’s barking, or it will get out of hand. They are able to learn tricks and seem to enjoy the challenge. Be sure to use a praise method or reward method, so they will respond well. Housebreaking may be a bit tricky, but will consistent training and praise, it can be done. If there are any questions or concerns, you can use a basic dog training guide to help.

Pomeranian Puppy Since this breed can be active, short walks and play time with other household pets or the family will be necessary. This will help to control their temperament and help them wear off that energy and curiosity. They seem to do fine in a small house or an apartment, as long as they can move around and work out some energy. It is important to always have a “Pom” on a leash, however, as they will confront other animals or people, even large ones.

Overall, the Pomeranian is an active, feisty, lovable dog who will respond well to taught commands and praise. They will stay loyal to their owners, and even a little territorial and protective of them. Most owners love this breed and have very few complaints, but only praise for this little dog.
