Dachshunds

Dachshunds are recognized by their long bodies and short legs. They are affectionate, friendly and outgoing. Miniature Dachshunds are usually 11 lbs and under at 12 months of age and the Standard Dachshund usually 16 to 32 lbs. This breed can easily live to be 15 years and even as old as 17 years or more! Most are only 9 inches tall, though they are longer than they are tall.

Dachshunds are no longer limited to the black and tan and red that we have seen for so many years. Now, they come dappled, piebald, brindle and in a staggering array of colors which make this breed fun because you never know what you are going to get in a litter! This dog makes an ideal apartment dog because of their small size and relatively low need for exercise. Despite being a less active breed, Dachshunds benefit from a fenced yard or enclosed area where they can run around without a leash. They are quite active and love to be walked and, despite their small legs, can keep up with you quite easily.

long haired dachsund Dachshunds are a breed that certainly need a lot of love and attention and considered 'lap dogs.' They are best with older, considerate children and are moderately protective. This type of dog is generally full of personality and outgoing, but can and does think for themselves, which may be seen as stubbornness. They are excellent watchdogs and will defend themselves if threatened.

They are wary of strangers, and will alert their owners of unusual behavior. Dachshunds are bold and outgoing, enjoying attention and frequently seeking adventure. They get along well with known children, but may behave aggressively towards unknown children. Most are good dogs to travel with. They are generally okay with other pets; however, they can be jealous, irritable, and very quick to bite (if necessary).

Dachshunds are usually easy to train for show and most really enjoy it. They are known for their spiteful attitudes and can be very stubborn, but patience, and friendly firm direction will win them over. Dachshunds are much too clever to simply make tricks for a click or eventually a bit of something to eat in the future. They must be sure that they will get fair price of their choice for their work and attention. This dog is apt to "return pain" if they "receive pain".

They are highly trainable, clever dogs. Many owners found them hard to train and to housebreak. But with proper attention, positive reinforcement and training, they will surprise you with a lovable and dependable temperament. They enjoy training and learn quickly. Dachshunds are not like border collies or shelties; they don't need you to give them a job. They are quite content doing their own thing.

wiener dog Dachshunds are prone to some health concerns. The main one is back problems with degenerative disks and they are highly prone to paralysis from injury and from bad breeding. This is due to their very long spinal columns and very short rib cages. Plenty of exercise is a good way to help keep down the weight that this dog tends to gain so easily. Dachshunds are very agile and can jump. Because of their shape, it's important not to let them jump off high places as this can easily injure their back.

Dachshunds are considered to be moderate shedders. They require minimal routine brushing to keep their coats healthy and in good condition. The longhaired and wirehaired Dachshunds may require extra grooming or help from a professional.

Dachshunds are lively and very affectionate. They are proud and bold, clown-like, curious, mischievous, very intelligent. They are versatile hunters and loyal companions. Well-trained this breed can make a wonderful addition to your home.
