Bull Terriers are medium sized dogs and therefore need according space. They need an area to run and play in order to exercise. Bull Terriers are fearless, assertive, comical and mischievous. The breed is loyal, affectionate and loving and can make a good family pet. Bull Terriers are superb athletes, always eager for a game of ball or Frisbee. Their clowning antics have made them a subject of cartoonists and commercials. A bull terrier is an investment of money, time and training. If you're not going to invest in quality dog training, then you will want to keep looking for another breed of dog. However, if you've fallen in love with the dog you see on all the Target store signs, then maybe getting a Bull Terrier is for you!

They are not dangerous, but they have a courageous nature and therefore knowing their essential characteristics and how to live with them is truly important to avoid any unwanted situation. Bull Terriers are primarily an owner-handled breed. An additional burden for the judge is the need to see past deficiencies in presentation to the virtue of the dog. Bull Terriers are very intelligent, but can be just as stubborn. They are happiest with their owner and family.

Bull Terriers are generally free of disabling genetic diseases. All puppies should be checked for deafness, as this sometimes occurs (most commonly in pure white dogs) and is difficult to notice, especially in a relatively young puppy. Bull terriers are strong and muscular and can be identified by their unique, egg-shaped head. Bull terriers should never be encouraged to fight, as their terrier nature gives them unlimited energy and their jaw structure allows them unrelenting strength. Bull Terriers are average shedders, shedding twice a year.

Bull terriers are, by and large, a healthy breed, but like all pedigreed animals they are plagued by certain maladies. Deafness has been known in the breed from its inception, and although deafness predominately occurs in white puppies, each dog should have been evaluated by the BAER (Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response) test. Bull terriers are energetic and fearless and will become attached and protective of their owners. Not recommended around small children as they will not tolerate teasing. Bull terriers are the ones with the aggressive nature and were used to develop the pit bull or fighting dog. Unfortunately, here in Australia, there are many dog attacks on children (often because the child has irritated a dog or it perceives the child as a territory threat)and the dog usually has bull terrier or Rottweiler in its breeding.

Younger dogs, however, may regard children as playmates and because of their strength could cause injury. Bull Terriers are thick-set and muscular with a short, dense coat. Acceptable colors are pure white (a dog that is mostly white must be disqualified in the show ring, although dark markings on the head only are permissible) and colored, which is any color other than white or any color with white markings. Bull terriers are intelligent but occasionally can be difficult to obedience-train. They also are more difficult to housetrain than many other breeds.

Bull Terriers are average shedders, shedding twice a year. Bull Terriers may be targeted for future "banning" in certain areas, or refusal of homeowner insurance policies. In this day and age, the legal liabilities of owning any breed that looks intimidating and has a fighting heritage should be seriously considered.
