Basset Hounds

Basset Hounds are an affectionate, large dog on short legs. Basset Hounds originated in France several centuries ago and were used throughout Europe as hunting dogs. Designed by monks who wanted a slower dog that could be followed on foot, Bassets proved to be excellent slow trackers of rabbit and deer. Basset Hounds have a slightly curved tail and very large, round feet under strong, wrinkly legs. They have short legs and sometimes require assistance getting into cars since they are not good at jumping. Short legs and slower movement made them easy to follow by hunters on foot. Short in stature at about 15 inches, the basset hound is a very stocky animal. The Basset can run at a quick pace but is better suited for a steady long jaunt. Basset hounds are still used to hunt rabbit, but they are more visible in parades than in pursuit of Thumper.

They are great with children but not very useful as guard dogs. Basset hound hunting starts with intensive and consistent training while still at the kennels. Basset Hounds are difficult to train and housebreak. They respond best to treat rewards, but the training might prove short lasting if the treat is not given too. Training can turn out to be a difficult task. Only patient, consistent owners will be a success. Training Bassett Hounds is best accomplished if you start early while they are still young.

Basset Hounds should never be left outside in your yard, unsupervised. Their deep voice carries a long way. Basset Hounds are pack animals that need other pets to be excited when left alone by their masters at home. Bassets have a deep, sonorous bark. This is a lovely and amusing household pet for people with a good sense of humor.

Bassets have very long and fine ears that hang in loose folds. Their neck is powerful, with heavy dewlap. Ear wax builds up and can lead to an ear infection if not properly cleaned. To keep your Basset smelling fresh and put an end to ear infections, clean its ears 2 to 3 times a week with a mixture of water and hydrogen peroxide. Bassets are susceptible to other health problems also, but despite their health problems, the Basset Hound lives an average 10-12 years.

Basset Hounds have relatively low energy levels, making them good for apartment living or for people who can’t accommodate a dog with high energy. Bassets have short, smooth coats and they don’t smell if they are well maintained.

Basset Hounds were developed to be able to track scents through tight areas where the larger scent hounds could not fit. Basset hounds also referred as scent hounds, are short-legged breed of dogs that are bred to hunt by scent. Because their nose is close to the ground most of the time, it picks up parasites, bacteria and some viral diseases. Basset Hounds can be difficult to house train, but can be obedient with gentle, patient training. A good home obedience training course is usually a good idea. Basset Hounds enjoy companionship and make gentle pets with delightful personalities.
